Vaisala premier sponsor of the 33rd International Conference on Radar Meteorology

Vaisala was a premier sponsor of the American Meterological Society's 33rd International Conference on Radar Meteorology.  The event was used to introduce the Vaisala's C-band Doppler single and dual polarization radars (to be launched later this fall) and Sigmet products such as RVP8, RCP8, IRIS and Sigmet HydroClass^TM to the community.

The conference is a biannual event this year convened jointly by the AMS and the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre (BMRC). The location for the event was Cairns, Australia which is in the north east of Australia and a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, a very comfortable location for such an event.

The conference brings together experts in the field of radar meteorology from around the world, particularly the US. This year there were many delegates from Australia and Asia.

A number of the major radar companies presented their latest offerings on their trade displays. Vaisala had a strong representation and a large open display. Many loyal and satisfied Vaisala customers were present and were happy to share their latest experience and find out what we had new to offer.

Pulse compression is a signal processing technology, which is closely related to coherent transmitter solutions such as Klystron or TWT, which are becoming more and more likely solution for future weather radars.

Real-time hydrometeor classification for the operational forecasting environment by Reino Keränen

HydroClass^TM addresses the key elements of the transition into operational polarimetric weather radars: robust real-time operation, smooth integration in the operative data streams, ease of commissioning and ease of use. Identification of hydrometeors is an area of continued interest in research, with promise of method enhancements and new cababilities. A comprehensive view is emerging on versatile use of polarimetry to increase the overall value of radar data.
